Fellowship competitions that include international travel are currently paused as a result of Columbia University’s travel policy. Due to the international impact of COVID-19, all Columbia affiliates are strongly urged to postpone any non-essential international travel at this time. For students, all upcoming travel outside the United States organized, led, or financed by Columbia is suspended until further notice.
Pepsico Fellowships for Research Travel / Study
*Because of Columbia's restrictions on travel during the pandemic, Harriman is currently unable to offer Pepsico fellowships for Research Travel/Study.
PepsiCo Fellowships are awarded annually to support semester and summer travel to and research in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Open to all Columbia faculty and students. To apply, submit a written proposal that outlines a program of study or research. Applicants should also include a detailed budget for the fellowship period.
Summer Padma Desai Fellowship
*Because of Columbia's restrictions on travel during the pandemic, Harriman is currently unable to offer Padma Desai Fellowships.
The Padma Desai Summer Fellowship supports travel and living expenses for summer research, travel, language training, or internship opportunities for undergraduates and/or graduate students whose interests include Russian and/or Soviet Studies. Students from the fields of Economics, Political Science, and History may apply. While preference is given to students who plan to use their fellowships in Russia, other locations that enrich a students’ understanding of Russian and Soviet Studies will also be considered.
Summer Civil Society Graduate Fellowship
*Because of Columbia's restriction on travel during the pandemic, Harriman will only be able to support remote internships. Harriman is currently unable to support travel.
The Harriman Institute Civil Society Graduate Fellowship supports graduate students from across Columbia University on a competitive application basis. The Fellowship supports travel and living expenses for unpaid practical summer internships at any international or non-governmental organization that benefits civil society in any of the countries of the Russian, Eurasian, or East-Central European region. Deadline: April 1, 2021.
Summer Language Study Fellowships
*Because of Columbia's restriction on travel during the pandemic, Harriman is currently unable to support travel. US-based programs or remote language programs will be considered.
The Institute’s Summer Language Fellowships are awarded to Columbia undergraduate and graduate students for intensive study of the languages of Russia, Eurasia, and East Central Europe in either the region or the U.S. Open to all Columbia University students. Summer Language Study support will be given in amounts not exceeding $5,000. Please include an unoffical transcript and a 500 word personal statement along with a budget. Have one letter of recommendation sent directly to Xan Faber at firstname.lastname@example.org.
