The Harriman Institute announces a new fall internship opportunity at Human Rights Watch. This opportunity is only open to current Columbia graduate students.
The Europe and Central Asia (“ECA”) Division at Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is currently seeking an intern in the New York office* for the fall 2020 semester. Ideally, the candidate will be available for about 20 hours per week. The internship will focus on human rights abuses in the ECA region, particularly in Central Asia, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, the Caucasus, and within the European Union. Projects and training may include conducting background research, writing summaries, writing protocols, and attending meetings. The intern may also assist with some Russian-English translations. Through assisting with research projects and the one-on-one interactions with our researchers, interns will gain a strong understanding of the work of the ECA Division.
The intern must be a student for the duration of the internship term. Applicants who are offered an internship must possess valid work authorization in the United States for the duration of the internship. Students with an academic focus on Central Asia or Europe and strong writing and research skills are encouraged to apply. The ability to read and write in English and Russian is essential. Previous experience working in the area of human rights or on countries of the region is an advantage. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable with a strong interest in international human rights. Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, internet applications) are required.
This internship opportunity is sponsored by The Harriman Institute at Columbia University.
